In an aquatic environment, an emergency can unfold in seconds. A patient slips on a wet ramp. A swimmer goes quiet below the surface. The staff closest to the pool are always the first responders, whether or not they have been trained for it.
That is why more Malaysian organisations are investing in corporate basic life saving training. This article shares what happened when Red Rescue joined IHT Rehab Shah Alam for a Water Safety Talk and Demonstration at their hydrotherapy pool, and explains what basic life saving training covers, which courses suit corporate teams, and how employers can fund it through HRD Corp.
What is corporate basic life saving training?
Corporate basic life saving training teaches employees to recognise water and medical emergencies, call for help correctly, and carry out safe first response until professionals arrive. It typically covers drowning awareness, safe rescue techniques, CPR and first aid. It is designed for staff who work near pools or in public facing roles, not only professional lifeguards.
For employers, the goal is simple: every person on duty should know what to do in the first critical minutes. Training turns bystanders into a capable first line of response, which protects patients, guests and colleagues alike.
Inside Red Rescue’s session at IHT Rehab Shah Alam

Red Rescue recently partnered with IHT Rehab Shah Alam to deliver a Water Safety Talk and Demonstration at the centre’s hydrotherapy pool. IHT Rehab is a Malaysian rehabilitation provider offering physician led recovery programmes, with hydrotherapy among its services.
The theme of the session was clear: safety does not stop at the water’s edge. Everything focused on one outcome, which was being better prepared before an emergency happens.
Understanding the risks
The session opened with awareness. Participants explored how to recognise potential risks in a hydrotherapy setting and why these environments call for a specific approach to safety. Recognising danger early is the first and most important skill in any rescue.
Practical demonstrations
The Red Rescue team then moved from theory to practice, demonstrating how to respond appropriately during an emergency in a hydrotherapy environment. Seeing a response performed correctly helps staff remember the right steps under pressure, when there is no time to think.
Red Rescue thanks IHT Rehab Shah Alam for hosting the session and for prioritising safety, awareness and preparedness for its team and patients.
Why do hydrotherapy pools need staff trained in life saving?
Hydrotherapy pools serve people who may have limited mobility, reduced strength or ongoing medical conditions. Even in shallow, warm water, a patient can lose balance, become fatigued or experience a sudden medical episode. Staff trained in water safety can spot trouble early and respond correctly within seconds.
The wider numbers show why prevention matters. According to the World Health Organization drowning fact sheet, there are around 300,000 drowning deaths worldwide every year, and over half of all drowning occurs in the WHO Western Pacific and South East Asia regions. Malaysia sits within the Western Pacific region.
WHO also recognises safe rescue and resuscitation training as part of effective drowning prevention in its practical guidance on preventing drowning. Drowning is also harder to spot than most people expect, a point Red Rescue explained in The Star feature on recognising drowning.
What does basic life saving training cover?
Basic life saving training covers drowning awareness, recognising a casualty in distress, calling emergency services, safe water entry, and rescuing a person from the water without putting the rescuer at risk. Most programmes also include CPR and first aid so staff can care for the casualty after the rescue.
Red Rescue’s Shallow Water Rescue Training is built for exactly this purpose. Its syllabus includes:
| Module | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Basic drowning awareness | Understand how and why drowning happens |
| Recognition theory | Spot a person in difficulty quickly |
| 999 ambulance calling steps | Give clear information to emergency services |
| Swimming pool crowd control | Keep other pool users safe during an incident |
| Past shallow water injury case studies | Learn from real incidents |
| Water entry techniques | Enter the water safely during a rescue |
| Land based rescue | Assist a casualty without entering the water |
| Assisting victim to land | Bring a casualty safely out of the pool |
Participants enter the water during the practical session, and the programme can accommodate up to 50 participants. Successful participants receive certification valid for two years. This certification is designed for shallow water rescues and is not equivalent to a full lifeguard certification.
Which Red Rescue courses suit corporate teams?
Red Rescue offers three HRDC claimable programmes for organisations. Shallow Water Rescue Training suits poolside and front line staff. CPR Certified Training builds CPR, first aid and AED skills for any workplace. Advanced Lifeguard Certified Training suits staff who need full lifeguarding capability. Water safety talks can also be arranged for awareness.
- Shallow Water Rescue Training: RM400 per pax, with a minimum of 10 participants. Optional exam fees are RM250 for the Basic Certification (Bronze Medallion) and RM600 for the International Certification under the International Life Saving Federation (ILS).
- CPR Certified Training: a 4 hour course certified by Emergency First Response (PADI), covering CPR, serious bleeding, shock, spinal injury and choking management. Learn more about AED skills in our AED Training Malaysia guide.
- Advanced Lifeguard Certified Training: for teams that need to take their lifeguarding knowledge further.
Each session is tailored to the client’s setting, so a rehabilitation centre, hotel and corporate office each receive scenarios that match their real risks.
