Water emergencies happen fast. Whether you are at a backyard pool in Kuala Lumpur or the beautiful beaches of Terengganu, knowing exactly what to do in the first few seconds of an accident can save a life. Panic is the biggest enemy in a rescue; having a clear plan is the best way to stay calm.
At Red Rescue, our professional lifeguards are trained to act instantly. However, you don’t need to be a pro to make a difference. Understanding these 4 Critical Drowning First Aid Steps is essential for every parent, homeowner, and traveler in Malaysia.
The 4 Important Drowning First Aid Steps
If you see someone struggling in the water or find them unconscious, follow these four critical steps immediately.
1. Safe Rescue and Call for Help
The first rule of lifesaving is: Do not become a victim yourself. * Shout for Help: Alert others nearby and tell a specific person to call 999 (Malaysia’s emergency line).
- Reach or Throw: Before jumping in, try to reach the person with a pole, a branch, or throw a lifebuoy or even a plastic jug.
- The Entry: If you must enter the water, ensure you have a floatation device between you and the victim to prevent them from pulling you under.
2. Check for Responsiveness and Breathing
Once the victim is on solid ground, you need to assess their condition quickly.
- Check Response: Tap their shoulders and shout.
- Open the Airway: Tilt their head back gently and lift the chin.
- Look, Listen, and Feel: Place your ear near their mouth for 10 seconds. Look for chest movement. If they are not breathing, or only gasping, you must act.
3. Start CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)
If the victim is unresponsive and not breathing, you need to provide oxygen to their brain and heart.
- Five Initial Rescue Breaths: For drowning victims, it is often recommended to start with 5 rescue breaths, as their primary problem is a lack of oxygen.
- Chest Compressions: Place your hands in the center of the chest. Push hard and fast (about 100–120 beats per minute).
- The Ratio: Perform 30 compressions followed by 2 rescue breaths. Continue this cycle until professional medical help arrives or the person begins to wake up.
4. The Recovery Position
If the person starts breathing again, or if they were breathing but unconscious when rescued, place them in the Recovery Position.
- Why it Matters: This prevents them from choking on water or vomit. Roll them onto their side, tilt the head back slightly to keep the airway open, and tuck their top hand under their cheek.
- Stay Warm: Drowning victims often suffer from hypothermia. Cover them with a dry towel or blanket while waiting for the ambulance.
Why Professional Lifeguards Make a Difference
While knowing these drowning first aid steps is vital, preventing the accident from reaching this stage is even better. This is why having a certified lifeguard on duty is so important for private events and public pools.
At Red Rescue, we specialize in:
- Constant Vigilance: Spotting the signs of a “silent” drowning before it becomes a tragedy.
- Advanced Equipment: Our teams are equipped with the latest first aid kits and AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators).
